English 1B, Monday 5/11/20

6-6:10pm:  How are you…?  What have you been writing for yourself?

6:10-6:20pm:  Narrative final drafts?  How do you feel?  How do you want the reader to feel?

6:20-6:45:  ALL IRBY… What did you think?  What about her writing and ideas do you most value as a reader?

6:45-7pm:  Your notes on Irby…. What did you find yourself noting most?

7-7:07pm:  BREAK

7:07-7:20pm:  Journal entries, OPEN MIC

7:20-7:40pm:  I have an idea, as to how to end this semester…. It will be a “take-home”, even though we’re all locked in our bloody homes so that’s a moot qualifier….. I’m asking for logical responses and ideas here… what do you want to write about for your final?

7:40-7:50pm:  What have you learned about yourself while being “sheltered”-in-place?

7:50-8pm:  Closing… thoughts… tonight’s page.

HW:  Final reaction to Irby, TYPED…   That is, your final assessment of her work.  If you want, add onto what you’ve already typed..

Final Prompts will be emailed to you before next class, and you will have three days to complete.

Journal Entry- I’m watching Kitchen Nightmares and find myself cooking and wanting to try new things in the kitchen. I’m watching The Last Dance and can’t get enough of playing basketball outside. I’m midway through watching Community and am myself in the middle of community college. Is life imitating art or art imitating life at this point. Am I drawn to these shows because they interest me or am I influenced by the shows to find joy in my activities. Will I want to start flipping houses if I start watching HGTV or do I have to get into remodeling my kitchen before I flip to that channel? The classic chicken and the egg argument. Do I control what I enjoy or am I being brainwashed to enjoy? I haven’t been to outer space or gone on adventures with my grandson but Rick and Morty is gonna be on soon so maybe I’m overthinking this.

My journal entries have been relatively sad, but healing. Excerpt: It feels like everyone is walking on eggshells around me. Sharp, uneven, large eggshells. I talk about something that hurts, and people jump to a positive of it, even if it’s unreasonable. I know I’m not getting a high school graduation ceremony, or a senior prom, or another lunchtime with my friends, and it’s absolutely crushing, yet my family will still throw in a “what if…” or “look on the bright side…” I understand the sentiment, but it feels like I’m not being heard. Oddly, at the same time, I don’t want to be heard either. I don’t want to talk or share. I just want to hide away from everything and forget life exists beyond the covers of my bed. It’s taken so much of myself to leave that state and get up and feel good about life. I’m proud of myself for that progress I’ve made today, and will make tomorrow, and the next day. I just want to keep moving forward, I’m tired of being stuck.

What makes each of the authors relatable and why do you feel that connection?

What has been your favorite book to read this semester and why?

If you could ask each of the readers one question about their writing styles or intention behind their writing, what would it be?

What has been your FAVORITE part of the quarantine?

I’ve been thinking a lot during this shelter in place notion. I’ve been thinking on my career because as you can see there have been many people left jobless. If they would’ve had an opportunity to look into the future ahead of time and see that this was going to happen. Would they have changed their career path. This quarantine has made me question a lot of what I’m doing but in a good way. I’m just tired of staying occupied by doing the same things I’ve been doing since quarantine has been in place. The more I explore I find other things to do but you can only do so much before getting tired of it. Now that they have opened up some trails, I’m glad to do some exploring and now with the rain coming in full clutch. I can enjoy the trails by myself because I don’t know of too many people that would want to go outside in the rain. I on the other hand enjoy the rain even though it make me sleepy and lazy. This one thing that has a caused a nationwide spread will be the reason why trust is going too be very valuable for years to come. It’s the one thing that even once it’s over, it will make you question everything about someone or something. Overall though, this has been quite the experience that I choose not to do again because I miss things being normal and not having to worry about little things. I’ve taken little things for granted and realized that those little things are just as important as the big things.

I think it would be cool to write about the authors’ reasons behind writing the novels we have read. (As Theresa stated above) That idea always stuck with me in our meetings during class–Why did the author write this?
I think we often just read books as if they are separate entities, not as if they are a part of the author. I think this class has shifted a lot of our outlooks on that concept and it would be interesting to write about for sure.

This would be good. There is definitely a connection that was made or feeling that was evoked…invoked…(I don’t know which is correct). The authors related to me in different ways and I think writing about why a certain author was my favorite would allow me to dig deeper into my own life and WHY those connections were made. Perhaps I could get a feeling for WHY they wrote what they did to begin with.

I believe that for our final, we should either choose to write about the connections between the authors and what it means to us. Conversely, I also believe that our situation in quarantine is unprecedented and perhaps a once in a lifetime occurrence. As such, we should keep these memories close, if another such event were to occur or use it to better deal with our current situations.

I would like talk about how we as humans will define this pandemic. Will we view it as a win or a loss? Will we view as a time distraught or triumph. How have other stayed occupied during this pandemic? How have your friends or yourself be affected by this? What has helped you the most? How have professors treated the situation? Maybe favorite thing about quarantine? There’s just is much more to talk about and write about, it’s actually quite difficult.

I’m always taking over the kitchen with my music and making a total mess trying to follow recipes. An idea could be writing about struggles during the quarantine and how those struggles that make us human connect to struggles that the authors of the books we read deal with. To add also writing about lessons that could be learned from the author to help you overcome those struggles and maybe what you could offer the author to overcome their struggles. It incorporates reflection but also connects to the authors and the struggles they express through their writing. I like all the other ideas presented, so any of those would be fun to write about.

You don’t know what you have until its gone. I’ve made a lot of goals and trying to find ways to improve myself while being held inside. For the final, I think we should definitely have the option to write about any author in particular as well as a synthesis on all the books… or rather a synthesis on the last three should be allotted because they have so much in common. I also think that writing about our lives or our experience over the last semester should be an options. If we were able to write about our experience of the last semester, mine would most definitely involve the books we have read. I think that a lot has happened this quarter and even writing a prompt on our responses to covid 19 would be educational .

I learned that I can be a joy to be around or a pain in the ass depending on if I’m working on myself. I learned that I don’t have to be bad at things if I am willing to put time and practice into it. I learned that I am capable of much more uncomfortability than I thought I was capable of before.

I’ve also learned that you are your own creator and can only do things that you force yourself to do. Sometimes it takes a bit more effort than intended but it worth the reward. Taking days off can be a bad thing because it messes up the flow but in my case it helps me get back into rhythm. Reading books as helped with my concentration and imagination. The most important takeaway from my time in quarantine has been discovering how adaptive, how versatile, I can be. Before this i had no idea this side of me even existed, and all of a sudden here we are, without being able to see each other, but still moving forward with our education, and our life’s. If you asked me a few years back what would become of me if I found myself in a situation like this, i would of probably dropped everything and given up on the entire school year. But now, not only did I withstand the storm, I actually came out on the other side in one piece and looking for the next challenge.

Being sheltered in place has shown me that I’m not as tough as I thought I was. I used to think I get up pretty quickly after getting knocked down, but I’ve been struggling with seeing myself do the opposite of that. Lately, I’ve worked on it. This past week or so I’ve made an effort to put what hurts behind me and not focus on the pain. I know I have to keep moving forward to succeed in life and to be seen. I know I need that to survive. I have learned that I’m good at acknowledging when I need help. I’ve also learned how dependent I am on outside influences! I’ve always been one to grouch about people in a joking manner, but I just have a lot of genuine love for everyone right now. I miss everything so much.
A quote from one of my favorite books, The Secret Life of Bees: “Above all, send the bees love. Every little thing wants to be loved.” That line has always stuck with me, but I hear it echo in my mind now more than ever.
