English 1B, Wednesday 5/13/20

6-6:10pm:  How are you…?  What have you been writing for yourself?

6:10-6:20pm:  Narrative final drafts?  How do you feel?  How do you want the reader to feel?

6:20-6:45:  ALL IRBY… What did you think?  What about her writing and ideas do you most value as a reader?

6:45-7pm:  Your notes on Irby…. What did you find yourself noting most?

7-7:07pm:  BREAK

7:07-7:20pm:  Journal entries, OPEN MIC

7:20-7:40pm:  I have an idea, as to how to end this semester…. It will be a “take-home”, even though we’re all locked in our bloody homes so that’s a moot qualifier….. I’m asking for logical responses and ideas here… what do you want to write about for your final?

7:40-7:50pm:  What have you learned about yourself while being “sheltered”-in-place?

7:50-8pm:  Closing… thoughts… tonight’s page.

HW:  Final reaction to Irby, TYPED…   That is, your final assessment of her work.  If you want, add onto what you’ve already typed..

Final Prompts will be emailed to you before next class, and you will have three days to complete.

    Topics for final?
    – perspective on any topic
    – hobbies, things you hate
    – fears, dreams
    – stories based off emotion

Just to add to the list of works that are the author’s story

One idea for the final would be to write about how we feel about this pandemic and how it has affected us, how it has changed us. I feel like we can all relate to this topic and be able to write plenty about it .

I’m feeling drawn to writing something for a final prompt that is narrative/reflective and descriptive to an extent. But also with analysis and critical thinking. I think that would be the best way to “quantify” the improvement of our writing skills. This idea is super vague, but I’m just throwing it out there.

Oh man Oregon? SF? Abroad??? I need to make up my mind. I wanna leave this whole place forever. Travel? I like the thought of moving around with no end in sight. Constant movement feeds a restless mind. Might just be the quarantine speaking. I’m not sure. I mean i don’t want to become a white savior or something. I want to live in a small town or maybe in a trailer. There’s this woman named Blanche who lives in a trailer, makes her own cheese, and travels all around the world. She’s been all over Europe and I want that more than anything. My dad used to do small jobs for her and she became very dear to us. We went to visit her in her trailer a while back and I loved every second of it. She’s surrounded by plants and lives to make her own life as free as she can. She paints in her trailer all day and makes organic food for her own consumption. Her old house was probably one of the most beautiful places I have ever been too. Her back yard was paradise. Tall well cared plants, redwood trees, bees, a pond. The whole area smelled of lavender and wood. She had this study with a sunroof and a hammock. The room was very white and reeked of old lady. But I loved that place more than anything. She used to have frozen chocolate chip cookies and I would eat them all day while running around her backyard feeding the chickens talking to my mom bout issues my 6 year old brain deemed important. My appreciation and tenderness that I have towards certain things trace back to that same house. It’s crazy. I’m not sure why I’m so drawn to that period in my life. I have singular memories. The more I think about them the blurrier they get. I know I’ll forget about the house and how it will forever be the only place that brought me peace and assurance.

What have you learned about yourself while being “sheltered”-in-place?

I have learned that I not only love having a normal, busy, and social schedule, but that it is essential to my sanity and health. I haven’t thought about it too much, but I never had body image issues before, but now that I am being so lazy and unproductive I have focused more on my body and hating on it, almost subconsciously… it is not making me happy! I just can’t stop. I have learned that being alone makes me feel kind of purposeless and empty. I need to have interactions with at least like 100 people a day to be happy! I also learned that I would much rather be exhausted and overwhelmed by busy schedules than have almost nothing to do. Of course I know there are a lot of things I can do, but I find myself moping around and worrying about life more than using this time for good things! I get what Professor Mikey is saying when he says “You realize what you care about and what your true energies are and where they’re placed in being stuck in your own house” and I think this is true for a lot of people, but I know I am not myself right now. Kind of like what Harmony was writing about earlier when she was writing about her old daily routine and how she feels like that is gone. This quarantine has not led me to self discoveries, at least not yet. It has only made me sad and anxious, and that is not who I am or want to be. And I am trying to change that but it’s hard for me to motivate myself!! I’m staying positive about the future though! Not trying to be a downer though, I know this is just something we all have to get through!

I think that this shelter in place order has taught me how strong I am. I am able to keep myself sane and to keep myself from going off the deep end. Yes, I have had my days of being in a state of complete depression and anxiety feeling helpless but I have been using techniques like music and meditation to help me. I have been going outside and reading more and putting my phone away as much as possible. I think I doubted my ability to be happy and to be ok with how life is. Life is usually in constant motion and now that life seems to be different I have adapted and mentally kept myself in check. I am also learning how mature I can be. I am not saying that I am mature, but in this situation, I think that I am trying to keep gratitude and perspective while many of my friends and peers have been complaining and acting as the world revolves around them.

  18. What have I learned about myself being sheltered in place? I learned that I become incredibly bored very fast. I’m so used to being on the go all the time and I have struggled with so little to do. Other than that I have learned a lot about the person I have become. I am always so hesitant to welcome change in my life, but over this quarantine I’ve accepted a lot of things that have been holding me back. It’s felt very freeing to say the least.

From being “sheltered” in place, I’ve learned that I can produce anywhere. Location is a sub-topic, at best. I have self, and not just a sense of it. This doesn’t impact or shape me much at all.

What I have learned about myself during this shelter in place is that I am absolutely a home body. I feel relieved that I can be working from home. I do miss my friends, but I don’t feel like I am dying without them. I learned how to relax and not always be on the GO. I keep thinking to myself, when will life give us a break like this again. I just think it’s a once in a lifetime thing but then again, I could be wrong. Either way I feel less stressed than how I was entering this semester and I guess that’s a good thing. Only thing I really miss is the gym.

I’ve learned that this shelter in place has been surprisingly easy to cope with for personally. I don’t wan’t to seem arrogant, or insensitive to other’s situations, it’s just that I haven’t had any real problems with getting into annadel, and it’s been surprisingly empty these past months…. so I get more of it to me I guess. Very peaceful so long as you can avoid the rangers. And in all fairness I have seen the odd person there every now and again, so it’s not like I’m the only one doing it!

  26. Sheltering in place.. It’s Fine. We’re all fine… I have learned whether I am on the go or sheltering in place that I absolutely thrive off having a schedule. It makes me happier, my day more productive as well as my kids happier. I went a couple weeks flying by the seat of my pants and it created chaos, mess, weight gain and some anxiety and depression. We can’t control much right now, but I can control the flow of my day. I like it that way.

  27. Being sheltered in place? I was born for it. I’m not anti-social, but I’m not social either. I am content being in my home. Maybe it’s because I get my socialization at work? I’m too exhausted to want to do anything else? I miss the little things like hiking Taylor Mountain nd the beach. But I’m lucky to have my little piece of paradise. My kids, my animals and just planted a garden. Plus I have enough projects to do to keep me busy on my days off.

Its taught me that sometimes, actually a lot of the time I am too hard on myself because all I get to do all day is think about what I am doing and how its going to effect/help me in the future. This can be good at times but sometimes I think I am pressuring myself too much. Ive also learned that I care a ton about my future and who I am going to be, more than I thought. Ive also found what really makes me happy and that I constantly have to be doing something but can’t do one thing for hours and hours LOL
