5-5:10pm: What are you writing in your journal? Haven’t started? All good…. Please try it!!
5:10-5:30pm: Sedaris findings… Share your thoughts. What sources did you find?
5:30-5:50pm: His character…. How would you describe it?
5:50-6pm: Before we read, what do we want from our read? That is… do you have certain expectations? What do you like to read? How do you like to feel after reading something?
6pm-6:15pm: Tell us about how you read…. Do you take notes? Write in the margins of your book? In a journal? WHAT?
6:15-6:35pm: As a student, we are constantly challenged, and show new approaches to working on our projects. We are “taught”, yes, but we also self-educate. How do you teach yourself to do something new, or improve at something? ‘Cause really, in the end, it’s all you and your efforts. And, how you study your efforts and the production from your productivity.
6:35-6:40pm: Think about how you use your time, be as efficient as possible. Any suggestions for us?
6:40-6:50pm: Closing…. What’s in your notes for tonight/on tonight’s page?
Assignment: Read the first four essays in Sedaris’ book. Please also read the “Author’s Note”. Be prepared to discuss and offer ideas on Tuesday. And as with every assignment, WRITE IN YOUR JOURNAL. Let me know if have any questions. Enjoy your weekend!!! Find Happiness and Humor, EVERYWHERE.
The way I’ve read the past couple books occasionally I will take notes but I never write notes down in the book. Instead I’ll write the page number next to the note a separate sheet of paper. As I go through a book I try my best not to speed read or skim through the boring parts because there maybe an interesting fact or piece of dialogue.

To learn how to do something new i usually watch someone else do it first to learn how to do it then i try it out and i keep trying till i get it right. same thing with improving a skill. I constantly do the thing im trying to improve until i get better or faster at it.

Self teaching is very important. All of my family are high school drop outs so when I needed extra help I had no one to assist me. So I had to take that extra step and always self teach myself and expand on whatever I needed help on

To teach myself something new I research it. The internet has been such an amazing tool in finding new ways to do things, new studying techniques, new note taking techniques etc. I also learn from doing. Trial and error has been an amazing way for me to figure out what works for me and tailor my learning experience to who I am and how I operate.

It depends. If it’s something I want to learn. There’s no strategy. No plan. No schedule, because when I do want to learn something I don’t stop until I get it. When it’s something that you want to learn and not something that you have to learn you’re even going to do it on your free time.

I’m listening to In the Heights and it pondered on me how cool it is how different stories can be told in different ways. We went from sharing stories through word of mouth and now it has evolved into a much more beautiful and extravagant thing!

If I go on an endeavor to learn something it all depends on the work ethic I put behind it. Something I don’t care about as much for example skateboarding I do every now and then maybe learn a new trick and focus on something else. Guitar on the other hand is something I put a lot of focus and effort into practicing for 1 to 3 hours at a time making sure to get repetition on riffs I can’t do as well, building speed and more. The bottom line being focus and repetition will lead to getting better or learning a new subject.

Focus. Yes!! Speed comes with effort, but speed isn’t the primary goal is it?

For the most part no speed is not the primary goal.

I am always excited to learn new things so that motivates me. I like to tell myself that I can always get better and improve at something, I just gave to focus and put it as a priority in my life. Because in the end I know it will be worth it!!

growing up was rough and the only way to get through the past 6 years was to realize that there is more than one perspective and to try to understand why people did the things they did i needed to see things outside of my own perspective. so that what i do it more than a way to learn its a lifestyle. though it does make learning new things easy.

I think passion is important too because if you are passionate about it you are gonna have that drive to put in the extra time to learn it

Very true! If you’re not interested, you are not invested. If the interest is elevated, or at a passion tier, then you are not just invested but connected.

I have to be in a comfortable and clam place, then I put away everything it can distract me, put a focus study song as back ground. And take a little break every hour

I keep myself focused by working on something for 40 minutes to an hour then take a 10 to 15 minute break so I don’t get overwhelmed.

when i learn something new it only typically happens when i want it to, however it can happen on accident, though I do think that when learning something it takes the power to listen and imitate well. Humans are built to imitate each-other and I think that in terms of learning something you don’t know that someone else knows and trying to produce the same procedures as your teacher, you will learn many new things this way.

I like the mention of imitation. I agree! A form of study..

I just make time for it. I make a mental schedule for the “most do’s” and the “push off until I have time”. I try really hard not to procrastinate so I have more time for the stuff I want to do and less time to stress about having to do it.

In terms of time management. Before doing any critical thinking. I try to find a distraction whether it be a movie, TV show or even YouTube just to clear my head. After doing this I feel like I can get the most efficiency out of my time when it comes down to the moment that I actually need to do to the critical thinking, because the distractions have already been taken care of. Although I feel like this doesn’t make much sense in text. I would describe more as a personal routine that just feels right.
