    Narration:
I stand before my favorite piece of cooking material. My steel god of smoke. I turn the Knob and with a click I can hear the internal auger working. Grrrr, Grrrrr, Grrrr. shortly after the sweet scent of apple smoke billows from out of its escape tube. The old boy is just starting to warm up, yet the saliva is already anticipating what it knows will be placed upon its fiery surface. A few minutes and the smoke sends out the signal, Whoo-Whoo. That means time to grab the meat. A beautiful New York Steak cut 2” thick and has been marinating for 24 hours. I throw it down on the grill with a sizzle we are off, shut the lid and let the smoke do its work. Four minutes and the anticipation makes the stomach grumble, open the lid and flip, Sizzle. More waiting only know you can taste it on the air, mmmm-mmmmm-mmmm, and after four more minutes it is time to snatch up the steak. Dinner is Ready……

  3. Good Evening Everyone! These past couple of days have been kind of wacky for me. I’ve been a little stressed and work has just made it a little more extra. I love working in the residency program though, because it’s never the same thing. My days are always filled with different type of issues from Women’s health to pediatrics, pregnancy and family medicine. Today was interesting because I got to work and I had OBGYN clinic today, I love that because to me, following a pregnant lady from when they are just finding out they are pregnant all the way until after baby is born, sometimes even when they are teens. It’s quite interesting. That was my morning, for the afternoon it was procedure clinic and I had a very intense toenail removal.

My day involved getting my new laptop (rosegold MacBook air!) all dialed in and set up. Between my couple zoom classes today I made some loaves of sourdough bread. I love the process of letting the Levian rest and then mixing in the autolyze and then resting again, next step is stretch and fold, for 4 45 minutes increments between stretch and folds, to ensure the best shape of your bread.

It is really a therapeutic art form if you will. There’s a lot of time between steps to allow for other activities. Its constantly a learning curve, anything and everything affects it; temperature, moisture in the dough moisture in the air, type of flour, type of starter you use, type of water even.

  9. My day has been crazy I woke up late and had to rush to my patient house and when I got there she was throwing her shoes at me and just yelling. I left her alone for 20 minutes then hear a loud eerie scream and I thought she probably fell off her bed so I rush to her but she was sleeping and that kinda scared me because that means from now on I have to always double think if she is sleeping or not. But after all that craziness she calmed down and she was happy.

My day has been super exciting and I’ve loved every moment of it. It’s actually my birthday today so a lot happened. Woke up and went to starbucks to get some coffee and say hi to my coworkers. Went home and hung out and played with my nephews. I was also surprised at my doorstep by my friend who brought me a music vinyl of Mac Miller. Also, currently just got done eating dinner with my family and got some cool gifts.

    A narration of my day:
Grabbing the last pair of shoes for a customer and making my last sale of the day, I was finally able to clock off of work. Walking towards the back to get my purse and belongings, all I can think of is my food waiting at my house. Driving home from work, I see the shining sun coming down just in time for a pretty sunset. Once I enter my house, I could smell the fall candles that were lit, I hear cilantro being cut up, and see homemade tortillas being made. We were making tacos for dinner! The perfect way to end my day with, my family and food.

The alarm sounded at 6:30am and as I looked at my phone I realized it wasn’t mine. It was my girlfriends and she has them set up for every five minutes from the until 7am so that was my que to put the pillow over my head. Then my alarm went off at 7. Surprisingly my daughter slept through all the other six alarms but she woke up when mine went off. we usually like her to be asleep when we leave because she starts to cry some mornings but this morning she was pretty calm. She asked me for some milk so i began to get up and she said “No! I want mommy to get me some” so I said “ok” and laid back down and my girlfriend got up to get her some. i laid in bed for a little while longer and got up to get ready for work. I grabbed some McDonalds breakfast on my way to work and picked some up for my buddy too. We began to dismantle the car that was dropped off the night before. We spent about an hour cleaning every surface and crevasse of the car and once we finished that we began to vinyl wrap the car. For lunch we had some Ohana Hawaiian BBQ. By the end of the day practically the entire car was wrapped and all we have left to do tomorrow is wrap the front and rear bumper and put the car back together. I went to Auto zone after work to pick up some parts that I need to add some lights to my truck because my car club is hosting a trunk or treat tomorrow in Petaluma. so ill be up late after class installing the lights. Now I’m sitting in my room where I usually do during our class sessions.

What Challenges me the most is trying to balance out my schedule. Between work and school and home life. sometimes I do feel overwhelmed because i find myself trying to please the people around me and i need to remind myself to take a step back and take a deep breath and take it one day/task at a time. But that is definitely a lot easier said than done.

  25. I think Irby was trying to let us know that no matter what life hits you with, it is always up to us to make it the best we can without having to dwell on those bad situations. She has proven that if she can over come her trials then we can too with our outlook on life.

      1. Well she has shown us that even in her darkest moments like her man situation and her images on how her life should be compared to what it is, that even though life hasn’t gone how she’s planned or imagined it to be, she is able to write it down and make light of it.

  26. Michael Pearson says:

One thing is that Irby writes because it is cathartic to her, I believe that at least. She puts what are her own believed demons on paper, to give them voice outside of her own head and b doing so maybe just maybe it takes away a little of the power they have over her. Example in we are never meeting in real life she is telling how much she dislikes voice mails, specifically when some just says”Dude, call me back”. She gets a little hyperbolic in describing why she hates that so much and ends by saying, “THIS IS HOW MURDERS ARE MADE”. I obviously don’t believe that she would kill someone. Furthermore She puts that little demon voice out there on paper and now she can let it go and feel a little better.

Overall, after reading Irby and getting to the end, I feel like the book makes you not afraid to express yourself. The only way people can really get to know you is if you open up. She’s a great example of opening up because her writing is raw and unfiltered. It’s similar to Sedaris, but I feel like her writing is more expressed as whatever is first on her mind and she’s not afraid to show it.

  28. The ending of Irby’s book is kinda everywhere I feel like she is telling way to many stories in this last essay..but what really caught my eye was she said that if we ran up to her in the grocery store we would be disappointed because she is not really smart as people think she is.. I actually do think is she not intellectually smart but smart as like she is smart enough not to let people opinions get to her or bring her down.

Samantha Irby has been both openly and hilariously about dealing with her figure, awkward experiences, and bad habits. She is able to treat her essays with love for food, her difficult childhood, and her present times honestly.

In one of her essays, she writes and let’s we know about the side effects of her diet journey, “when I wasn’t burning calories from breaking a continuous stream of putrid wind, I was sweating on the toilet as three ounces of food karate-chopped their way through my intestinal tract.” This is an example of how open and funny Irby is. Not only does she make me laugh but makes me realize I can be this funny in my writing as well.

doing that little half run half bear crawl galloping, I scamper up the steps in the hallway, leading to the upstairs bathroom. My phone laying on the sink counter starts yelling at me the time is 7:40. SH!T, my 20 til’ class alarm is going off and I just got back from my run to shower. With the proficiency of Helios I jump in the running water. Soap. shampoo. condition, who am I kidding I only soaped. I’m out before the cold water heats up. I complete my PURPOSEFUL daily obstacle course of cloths on the floor of my room, agility training of course. Transverse to closet, get a outfit on and i’m back downstairs before 7:55. Feeling good with my last second “your going to be late” skills that took years to accumulate, I sit down at my computer for class. While waiting my cat, Sir Jackson (There was a physical knighting process a year ago) greets me with a little jump onto my lap. I tell him how cute he is, he responds with regurgitated contents of his stomach. Now my cloths, computer, and chair covered with his graces he feels the conversation ended and prances along to his food bowl. Another shower and cloths cleaning process later I am here. Leading quite coherently from day narrative into the reasons of my 20 minute tardiness to class when I started writing this. I do apologize for being late.

By the end I came to the conclusion that though she is a successful author Irby is still just human. She has normal self conscious thoughts that most of us do. She has self doubt and chooses not to do things because of it. And i know a lot of things that i haven’t done because I doubt myself. But since Irby was able to write down and express how she feels it makes the reader feel like they can do the same thing
