Quick meeting tonight….
5-5:10pm: Intro….. How was/is your day??
5:10-5:35pm: Irby…. Where are you in the book? (Don’t worry about spoiling…. Even if you know what happens, you still have to read and for your own opinions and reactions.)
What is in your reactions? How is Irby narrating her days versus Lawson?
5:35-5:50pm: What do you want to write? What story do you want to share with readers? If you had to write ONE story (which you are, being alive), what is it?
5:50-6pm: Close… What’s on the page?
ASSIGNMENT: Finish Irby’s book over Spring Break, write three page reaction to the entire book. An opinion, singular idea. DO NOT OVERTHINK THIS. But, still, have pride in your work, ownership of your idea.
ASSIGNMENT: Think of ideas for a story, from YOUR life. Come back with notes and ideas and possibilities… canvass your thoughts, prospect for new ideas.
ASSIGNMENT: Research memoirists, people who write from their own life like Irby and Lawson, Sedaris. Who did you find? Who do you want to read… Who would you like to have coffee with?

Hey everyone!!!!!!!!

Hey y’all, today’s been pretty weird. Things just haven’t seemed to go very smoothly. I slept through my alarm then I went to my acting class which is usually a great time but today’s class was a mess. We didn’t get much done and I left feeling more stressed than when I started. Then I went to my oil change appointment and it turns out the appointment was made for tomorrow, so I made the trip for nothing. I took a walk and got some in n out and I’m just hoping the rest of my day is relaxing and stress free

Hi!
Today has been sluggish. I feel like I keep losing track of time, and I feel guilty for “not getting enough work done” – even though I’m definitely working my butt off. My brain is mean.

I feel like everyone should have the first 4 days after daylight savings off or something because everyone struggles with day to day tasks or simply- waking up lol
some days we get a lot done and some days we won’t but that is okay. Listen to your body and take care of it. love it. ❤

My day has been alright. My wife is watching her parents place for a few days so I won’t see her, and with both of our anxieties it can be kinda tough when we’re separated for long stretches of time. Currently pushing to be like top 1-2 % in a video game so that’s always fun, just been a day of trying to remain calm while petting my lovely cat. Honestly always excited when this class rolls around because of the fun interactions we get to have. Ready to kick some ass tonight!

My day has been okay. I actually didn’t notice daylight savings happened at all so it’s funny someone mentioned that. I bought a some new clothes. That was exciting I got two pieces of clothing that had strawberries on them and also two pieces of clothing with skeletons on them in some way. One of the skeleton pieces includes skeletons skateboarding. I hope this gives you an idea of who I am as a person, what type of person wears both strawberries and skeletons? I’m not sure what that means to you but, that’s me.

My day began a little later than usual since my morning class was cancelled I got a little extra sleep. Then went for a run for the first time in a while hoping to start being more consistent with that again. I am in the chapter love and marriage and when irby talks about how you shouldn’t stress over people not liking you. What value do they bring to your life? Do you really want or need in your life? Those were some questions I was asking to myself while reading that chapter.

I am on chapter 6ish and I feel Irby’s approach to constantly comparing her life to mainstream lifestyles or simply bringing them up all the time is to 1) understand her life and where she fits in and 2) show how these unrealistic social expectations in every corner of life can hinder true normalcy and the ways we treat people or view other people.

I’m actually using the next few days as we enter Spring Break as my dedicated time to read the book, but even within the amount of I have read, Irby has a more controlled narration style. It might still be exuberant at times but it’s a more consistent flow of information compared to the erratic at times nature that Lawson puts forth. Despite that, I still loved Lawson’s book as it connected more to me, but to each their own!

Hey everyone sorry I’m late! My mom had surgery today so I’ve been at her house mom sitting. I’m about half way through Irby at the moment. I enjoyed Country Crock (I think that’s what it was called). I enjoyed reading about her adjustment to countryish life and how it’s changing her perspective.

I just finished the chapter “Lesbian bed death” a very interesting chapter for sure. I enjoy chapters like these because it gives you a small break in the reading while also giving you some humor added on. My reaction to the reading is very mutual to Lawson’s writing but like I have said before Irby delivers her writing in a very calm and inviting way, making it a enjoyable read.

I’m just digging how real irby is she’s not hiding away any insecurities or trying to appeal to anyone else. She’s telling her stories as they happen and how she wants. One example I just recently passed in the book she goes for entire pages talking about how she thinks it’s impossible for an adult to have totally clean smooth legs. And it’s just something I’d never even think about but as soon as she brings up something I’m enjoying her explanation of even something as obscure as that.

I’m on chapter 7 hysterical, which I’m finding really funny. I feel like Irby engages with the reader more than Lawson. Which I enjoy.

Really…? Explain!! I agree with you, but try and build that. If not here, then in an essay, maybe, later…?

I’m around page 120 in the book, Irby just got done talking about periods and getting a hysterectomy because she doesn’t need hers. I think part of what makes Irby feel like a friend is that she take’s Lawson’s self acceptance to another level. Lawson seemed to focus more on self acceptance in relation to mental health and getting through that where Irby’s perspective feels a little different. Lawson has to face hurdles because of societies stigmas in regards to mental illness. Beyond that her primary hurdle is her mental illness. I think Irby’s writing focuses more on overcoming those ingrained societal standards, expectations, and stigmas that effect everyone to some degree. She writes about body confidence, not dressing to impress if you don’t want to, and she’s a black lesbian woman which inherently is just going to make societies effect on her psyche different. The representation made me happy because I’m bi and I never see gay characters in the books I read in school, especially because she’s the main character and the author of the book at that. I also found her writing much more relaxing to read, because sometimes I think Lawson’s meaning would hit you in the face more, where Irby you relate to something but she finds an underlying message to make you think.

The way Irby delivers her day in her writing is a very fluent but also talks about her day in more of a real way, she talks about her oily hair and how she has dandruff when she doesn’t wash her hair but then websites tell her its bad to wash your hair daily so she iterates how she is confused and doesn’t know what to choose. To me this is a more “real” way of her describing her day instead of saying she just did her hair perfect and nothing went wrong while doing it. She keeps driving home the fact that no one is perfect and everyone has the same problems, some people just tend to hide these problems.

I’m 1 page away from love and marriage . One of the significant differences to me is how reading Irby gives me a lot of clear insight in who she is as a person. Where Lawson would make me raise A LOT of questions about who she actually is and what her motivations are. I’ve said it before, but reading irby makes me feel calm. Welcomed. Reading Lawson I felt a certain rush, because Lawson is so (freaking) interesting to me! But I jjust couldn’t piece together who she really really is. I love reading Irby and also reading her blog when I’m sitting somewhere and want to peak into somebody’s life.
