An idea I was thinking on a lot today was self forgiveness. I’m a very forgiving person, I love to grow with my family/relationships. So why do I have such a hard time doing that with myself? I’ve been reflecting on moments in my past that I might hold resentment towards myself for and what I need to do to let them go.

I work with kids and I’ve been trying to instill honesty, active listening, and patience with the kids but they haven’t took any of my motivational words and examples into consideration. I haven’t seen any changes in their actions and so today while I was thinking of the idea how I have been preaching this for weeks with not much consistent change it led me to the idea well okay what else can I do to shape this habit?
Instructional videos or perhaps certain mini projects that really revolve around what I am trying to instill. Perhaps the help of my encouraging words, videos and hand on projects combined can really help penetrate what I have been trying to do over the past couple of weeks.

An idea I had today was about a study I read yesterday. It was about how sexist people have less activity in a portion of their brain where we identify a human as having emotion and thought. I was thinking about this today and how this could be the case for a lot of different things as well. What else is determined by brain activity and how can we hope to change the way our brain activates to make people less sexist.

This week I’ve been thinking a lot about my grandma. I saw her for the first time in exactly a year. It was really hard. I’m really upset with my family for not telling me it had gotten this bad. I had seen the effects of her dementia before, and it seemed to progress very slowly back then. But now it’s exactly one year later, and the pandemic has taken more from her than seems **fair**. She doesn’t remember most of our relationship, or even how we’re related.
Despite that, she’s exactly as gleeful as she was when I was a kid. It makes me remember parts of my childhood that I assumed I had forgotten years ago. She was a co-director of a preschool and was always hands-on with her activities with the kids. She loved stories, and “critters”, and she always bragged about how good she was at getting loose teeth out.

I’m forming more concrete ideas for my final paper. I just need a good time to word vomit out some coherent stories. Sedaris is helping and bringing me back to my narrative roots so to speak. He was one of my first favorite authors and I’ve been reading his books since I was really young. But readin g Sedaris is also super raw and making me think about death a whole lot so whoops

Reading Sedaris makes me think about how he illustrates his main points with story. They are usually succinct, and his narrative voice is definitely THERE. But after reading long enough, the stories sound more like the characters of people/ideas around him, and less like he’s comentating about a thing he remembers. I like how you get immersed in his stories, but he has clear narrative control the w h o l e time

At this point I just have a bunch of notes written on a page about things I have thought throughout the semester that supports my idea. From here on I want to build a formal idea and put all my ideas into one prompt that I can understand clearly while also not just having a generic idea/prompt.

I’ve written down 3 “chapters”. 3 different stages from my life, nothing chronological but that include people who play into these stages and how they have formed me. this should help me to reach my writing goal of *trying* to give you a 360° view of my life.

The main idea I have is how I grew up in the Arab world (mostly talking about Kuwait where I lived for 17 years) and how it differs, but it’s kind of the same. I think it would be really interesting to write about and read and talk about mental illness in the Arab world. Another thing that I would want to touch on is freedom and how you can feel stuck as I live in a really small country with not a lot of opportunities.

The idea I wanted to build upon this semester is doing things for yourself instead of others. By this I don’t mean you shouldn’t help others but you shouldn’t have to change yourself or your goals to fit what someone else wants you or your life to look like. I think integrity goes hand and hand with this, you shouldn’t have to fake certain beliefs to get along with people. The books we read taught me that if people see who you are and don’t accept or like it, then they aren’t worth your time anyway. Even Sedaris has a way of viewing the world that not everyone can understand or see eye to eye to, but he’s proud of it and he finds the people who do understand.

I feel Sedaris could leave me with answers or asking questions at different times. Sedaris to me sometimes jumps to one topic to another all in a page in a half leaving me asking questions about something he mentioned but never delved into. I feel it is up to the reader and how they view the writing to depend whether or not they are left with questions or answers.

My idea that I think has been building up even before this class but this class has definitely helped me recognize it is confidence, my writing being one of the prime examples of where I lacked it before this class and worried too much about other opinions and things like grades and fitting certain restrictions.

to build around the question ” Does Sedaris provoke more questions or answers?” is he wanting to leave us question some of is writing for the suspense and us figure the answer later or is was it something he just didn’t finishing developing more into detail.

Humoristic, mischievous , challenging to make me write and think. His way of writing . The way he starts normal sentences and turns them into something controversial or humoristic.. mischievous. Sedaris is like an thought controller. The way he formulates his sentences he guides you a certain way and then completely rips you of the way you’re going.
I like sedaris.

ME: Sedaris is something of a shape-shifting cosmos when it comes to form. He adheres while concurrently staying clear from any obedience. His narrations walks lines that haven’t yet been defined and may never will be…. He’s addicted to the diarist lean and truth-painting of several varying Now’s. Each page is a plain of inquiry…

In my opinion I think through Sedaris answers questions, in showing the experiences he has faced, especially the ones where he did not have the answers going into them, he provides some guide and knowledge to those reading. We get to experience his experiences throughout after they have already happened, even though when they originally occurred he was answering questions. So I guess he’s kind of asking questions to find answers for him then and us now until whenever.
