I agree with this. My middle child is Autistic and if I didn’t learn how to listen we would have been in a world of trouble. I tell him regularly he has helped me grow a human more than anyone or thing ever.

Omg yes! I feel like because he wanted to badly to be liked and accepted and made feel normal for who is truly was at a young age that, that made him the person he is today. Accepting of people that are different because we all are.

I feel like Sedaris is the type of friend who as soon as you start up a conversation with he gathers all the information and makes no judgement on you until he fully knows the true you. He may think all these thoughts about you but he analyzes every situation, and gathers all his information together to make sense of it all. In The Lagger Heads he states that, that was when he started to realize he was not a “normal” boy, he avoided playing with them so that he didn’t have to struggle with trying hard to pretend to act like the rest of the boys. I felt that. He made me feel some type of way. Like it isn’t fair, he shouldn’t have ever felt like he needed to do that but it happens and it made me wish we could all just be more accepting of each other like he does.

The beginning of “A friend in the ghetto” is really interesting. When I get a sales call I never give them a chance to get the second word in, but he keeps the man on the phone. He also was upset when the phone ringing the next day wasn’t him.

In A Friend in the Ghetto, when his mother says ” you need people like that in your life so you can feel better about yourself” , I got a little upset because I feel like we shouldn’t be using each other like that, but rather help each other feel better together.

Well I think that to be able to realize that your own parent is in the wrong and you are able to not do it yourself in the future. That is a very adult thing to do in my opinion.

My Favorite of the readings was Logger Heads. When he came to the realization that he was trapped as much as the creatures that he a Shaun would put in their fish tanks.

The passage that made me feel something was “If I ruled the world.” I honestly had to read it twice. Coming from him I was confused on why he wrote the piece. After some deep thought I realized he was not being serious…

But if you think more he was thinking in a way that someone he doesn’t agree with and that is quite impressive.

I think with Sedaris, it can be a little difficult at times to know if he’s being serious or not. At least for myself! WHich I also believe is what makes his stories that more interesting.

If I ruled the world made me some type of way. Poking fun of religion is always taboo, but then the more I thought about it, and if im understanding him, he was more making fun of extremist who push their beliefs on someone who might not be interested, or how extreme some people go to suggest that everyone and their mom are going to hell, just cuz they dont agree

Also When he noticed that weeks has passed and the salesman hasn’t called him back, he started assuming that the salesman went from a bad situation to something worst, had me thinking that just because someone is in a bad situation doesn’t always gets worse but they can get better. For example the salesman could of found a better job for himself.

Sedaris writing makes you feel personal or intimate with him in the sense that you know him well. Been there during the stories he tells. me, Living very different up bringing than him, and still being sucked in to understanding every thought he has within his writings and the moods of his stories shows how creative of writer he is.
