I think she will be just as raw and unapologetic, she definitely takes me as someone who speaks their mind as they please and just that ideology alone makes me smile and look forward to reading this.

After seeing the titles for her blogs and novels I’m starting to think that like Lawson, Irby’s sense of humor is going to be very very unique. She’s similar to Lawson in the fact that she suffers from some mental illness and if we’ve learned anything this semester this tells me we’re looking at one hell of an interesting person here.

For writing, I found that planning out the writing in an outline is the most beneficial thing. I have a difficult time starting my essays but I found that the outlines help exponentially. I also found that if I just start writing, I get more done. If I just sit around thinking of what to write nothing gets done

Last semester I had this professor who was a very tough grader and gave zero feedback on essays except to say how terrible it was**sad face**. This definitely traumatized me so whenever we’d have something due I’d get crippling anxiety. I found a way to cope through it but it just sucks that this is so many of our experiences. I still have that initial dread which I’m working on entirely eliminating. But once I sit down, get comfy. Have my water with me and a lil snacky to snack on I’m good! I try to relax and just trust the process. I write everything I think of, eventually I find my zone, then edit and expand from there.

  12. Lily Backus says:

My main suggestion for essay writing will always come back to the thesis because I think it is the most important. Everything in your essay must function to support your thesis and your topic sentences that indicate what you will be using to proving your thesis in that paragraph, should also support it. From there you’re golden if you have a solid, arguable, strong thesis statement and evidence that effectively proves it. I also like to refute the other sides point. With that structure I can usually write a whole essay pretty solid in one go if I already have thought of a strong thesis statement and have an idea of how I can prove it. Also you have to care what you write about, figure out why this argument is important to you and what you want people to get from it.

I don’t really like writing essays and handing them in just because I know I’m not good at writing so I just try my best and hopefully it would be good. One thing that helped me get an idea for my essay is to write all my ideas down and why I like that idea or wanted to write about that idea and It helped me realize what I wanted to write about.

My advice to colleagues is to be like Lawson; just right honestly and openly, and try not to let yourself be controlled by your prior English teachings. Just get the information out and figure it out from there.

So friends, for writing a bigger essay. Use your thesis when you’re writing something and you don’t know what you’re going to say next. It’s going to be a clunky paragraph for a while but !!! that can be fixed later ;0 just keeeeeep writing

I like to have multiple drafts when I write the first one it basically all my ideas on what I’m writing about it probably doesn’t make much sense than I would expand my ideas and put them into paragraphs and for the last draft and just correcting. the wording, grammer, etc. This really helps me as I wont be in my head about making the essay really good from the first word as I find it hard to start an essay.

My “advice”… f/ck essays. Emphasize the idea, your writing of it, and support of and belief in YOUR idea. Yes it is an essay technically, and yes you submit it for a grade… but SO WHAT? Write first, and freely, MADLY… edit later. Love you writing and that reality that you are a writer if you want to be.

A lot of times for me the hardest parts of writing an essay are starting and coherently getting my point across and backing it up enough without being repetitive. I tend to second guess myself and to amend that and make sure my point is solid I think it gets repetitive.

I only have the goal of finding a passion that can be followed to find a career that I will enjoy working. I’m completely lost in my life other than that singular goal. Reading Lawson makes me remember that other people still exist and feel things and everybody is weird despite us doing our best to hide it. School is stressful and Covid 19s quarantine has isolated me from a lot of the other random people I would usually see, its gonna be uncomfortable when it finally ends because I’m so used to being around the same 4 people every single day. My job right now has been super annoying and painful because they wont schedule anybody else to work in my section with me so I mean I guess I’ll just suffer in silence in a job I absolutely despise for no reason other than habit. Everything in my life right now feels like its on a timer and I’m just stuck watching it all come tumbling down despite my greatest efforts to prevent it from doing just that. I mean at least I’m working on the essay according to my schedule and should finish before the due date. I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.
