5-5:10pm: Has anyone laughed lately? At a certain point, don’t you just have to laugh? And notice, this is a QUESTION. Not a judgment or statement.
5:10-5:30pm: Let’s talk about humor in Composition. How is humor part of composition? How can humor be literature? What is the value to humor? Has anyone heard of David Sedaris? If so, what do you know?
5:30-5:50pm: Analyzing humor, comedy, anything that makes us laugh. What does it do to the writing? Just make it entertaining, or something else?
5:50-6pm: Finding funny in everything…. Can it be done?
6-6:20pm: Humor in our lives, in our families, in some of the dumb stuff we do…. What do you think? Me, I have to laugh at myself when I f/ck up, otherwise it poisons my mood and vibe.
6:20-6:40: David Sedaris…. Someone who writes differently. In a diary then to a formal essay. He teaches us not just about comedy, but about writing an essay. To enjoy the liberated writing in a diary or journal first, then organize. To make writing yours!
6:40-6:50: Close…. What do you have in your notes/on tonight’s page?
ASSIGNMENT: 1, Research David Sedaris. 2, type and EMAIL ME a 2-page reaction to your findings on Sedaris…. What do you think of him? What is he like? What sources did you find useful? (HINT: Watch his videos on YouTube, to start!). 3, write out your goals for this semester, not just for this class but all-encompassing, and write how you plan to satisfy them. Be prepared to discuss next meeting.
Also, I will be starting my Zoom office hours next week, by appointment. Stay tuned!

It is pretty challenge to write with humor. I do admire people who can do it so easily

I think you can find humor in a lot of things, but it’s also good to know when to stop and not include it. I feel that a lot of authors we read in school try to hard to be funny and instead can ruin the gravity they created in other parts of their story

I feel like the books we read in school aren’t really there to make us laugh but to teach us a lesson. It would be much more benefical if they targeted the right books for the right audience

I think it’s possible to find humor in everything, but it is a choice. I personally think there should be a balance. I use humor to cope with difficult times but I also think its important that I allow myself time to feel painful emotions fully so I can work through them

I think when you are making fun of something relative to you (principally the bad situations) makes everything easy, But again, when it is relative to someone/something else we do have to have a little bit of empathy.

Humor can be found in every aspect of life which is what makes it so great. Writing creative essays however I have probably tried to incorporate humor the question would be whether or not it landed with the teacher.

Doesn’t have to. The humor has to contribute to the functionality and coherence of the writing.

In my house hold we take little jabs at each other that are supposed to be harmless jokes. But after so long those kind of jokes could get to you because they’re basically pointing out your flaws in a jokingly way.

That’s interpretation, if one were reading this story. Maybe try adjusting the angle of your perception. Believe me, I’m there with you. Humor can be anything but everyone has different view of what is humorous to oneself. Boundaries are sometimes crossed but humor is to the beholder. Some people find horrible things humorous but it is just an opinion and that is what humor is based upon.
