510-5:25: Sedaris…. Opinions. Good, bad, indifferent. BRING IT. Just support your opinions, of course.
5:25-5:50: When we read your story, we will……..
5:50-6pm: Forget tonight’s page for now, what’s in your blend of thoughts and visions?
ASSIGNMENT: Read the next 4 essays in Calypso. Write in your journal. Be ready to present over zoom on Monday and engage me and your colleagues.
NOTE FROM ME: If you’re doubting yourself, don’t scold yourself for doing so. Study Self, educate Self on what’s to follow.

What makes me happy is actually something I have been debating as of late, as I’ve been having a lovely battle with depression as of late. The things that make me happy are my wife, my cat, music, and gaming with friends. Happiness has been difficult for me to catch as of late, but I’ve been trying to put things in perspective and find happiness in my existence.

My happiness? I’m looking at it as I write it. I’m having dinner with the people that “adopted” me into their super close family about 4 months ago. We all love eachothers presence and I feel loved and I feel valued. we’re eating outside, looking at the field where my donkey and horse are, when the day is slowly coming to a warm end. We crack jokes and share joy with eachother, no matter how great or how bad our personal days have been, we end it together and celebrate with joy. I consider myself extremely lucky to be surrounded by such pure hearted people. They bring me happiness.

What makes me happy is a constant struggle. Happiness is a muscle I have to work out every day. The truths in that happiness is that it isn’t easy, and can’t be expected.

Things that make me happy are things like the obvious..music, playing music, things like spending time with family and friends and enjoying the time I spend with them, smaller things like sitting down at the end of the day and being able to relax. The are my truths because these are the things in my life I enjoy doing the most therefore making me happy.

I think I’m happy when I’m working on things or doing things. I find I tend to feel more down and in a funk when I don’t do much or if I’m not productive, even if that means just finding more interesting things to do. My day is telling me to go and bake or do yoga or read or do a face mask or dance later today.

Painting, being active, being outdoors and especially at the foot of the ocean make me happy. But some mornings I wake up and AM just happy. My animals makes me feel connected when no humans are around and my family and friends when we gather. Sometimes a friendly smile makes me happy. The world is rich with it if we are interested enough in receiving it.

I think that Sedaris is a different than the other two authors that we read but they still share similar good qualities in their writing. think that Sedaris is by far the most sarcastic out of the three but the main thing that I have found is that he writes about things that he knows others can relate to. This doesn’t mean that he isn’t writing for himself but more so that he knows what others are going through and wants to share his experiences with others who might be going through it

Sedaris seems like someone I would have grown up knowing. My dad is involved with the community a lot, and I met people through him that remind me of Sedaris. Its a nice nostalgic feeling. I think it makes it easier to read.

Hello. The day is telling me to stay focused on my “To-Do” list priorities as we only have about six weeks left in this semester. To pay attention to my thoughts at night so I can rest well. What makes me happy are harmonies, melodies, symphonies, cosmic music resonating through space… Science makes me happy, e.g., Ingenuity Maritancopter. My special extra-terrestrial, S.E.T. My kitty cat “Dusty”… etc. The truth is I may be a math-minded person deep down inside. I respect and admire platonic relationships. I can speak cat language.

Sedaris has an edge to him that I find a bit removed, yes more intimate and sincere with his readers. You?

I see what you mean. I experienced some of his writing to be almost blunt. Like on Page 29, when he is remarking about Tiffany’s suicide attempt. Essentially he seems removed and bothered by her actions, but remarks on his family as a club he wouldn’t want to leave.

Sedaris.. I just keep coming back to how blunt and dry he is. No matter the subject, he’s coming in hot and dry whether you’re ready or not.

One night I heard a creaking sound and noticed that the minivan parked a dozen or so steps ahead of me was rocking back and forth. A lot of people where we live seem to have sex in their cars. I know this because I find their used condoms, sometimes on the road but more often just off it, in little pull-over areas. In addition to spent condoms, in one of the spots that I patrol, I regularly pick up empty KFC containers and a great number of soiled Handi Wipes. Do they eat fried chicken and then have sex, or is it the other way around? I wonder.

I love the way he speaks about his family, his tone is very calm and loving. For instance, “I’ll sit on the edge of the mattress and hold their sheets to my chest, hugging them a moment and breathing in their smell.”

I have enjoyed each book we have read throughout the semester so far and I find myself now enjoying Sedaris’s book as well, maybe just not as much. I enjoy how Sedaris engages his audience with different stories but does not spend to much time on each story which I enjoy. I cannot pinpoint it but I am just not connected to this book like I was the others yet.

Sedaris is such a good soul. He has learned his lessons from his life and now is able to live a calm carefree life. You know, until his family comes to visits lol, but he still has a very loving calmness towards them.

I’ve been enjoying Sedaris’s writing because he has a nice flow to it for example in the fitbit chapter he would stray from talking about his fitbit obsession and then he would go back to it in a few pages while it’s still fresh in the reader’s mind. I do find Calypso much less relatable than the other books though, because he doesn’t have any personal struggles I relate to like there was in both Lawson and Irby’s books. The most prominent points of writing in his life I’ve noticed in Sedaris’s writing are probably his sister’s suicide and possibly his obsessive fitbit use. I can see this expanding further in the book so hopefully there is potential there, but it isn’t as in your face as the other essayists we’ve read that’s for sure.

Sedaris keeps everything calm and mellow and I like that. I also get this feeling that he is an observer. He observes his steps, the trash on the side of the road, the condom packages, and KFC containers. One of the funny lines I read was when he said ” Do they eat fried chicken and then have sex, or it the other way around? “

I hope to take pieces of Sedaris’s style into my writing. His skill for writing about something life changing but also leaving room for the reader to have their own feelings about it as if it happened to them personally.
