ENGLISH 1A – 5PM

10/6/20

5-5:10pm:  How are you?  What have you been writing?  How are you going to approach the rest of the semester?  And yes, it’s time to start thinking that way, already.

5:10-5:30pm:  Your life as Literature..  Your moments are manuscripts.  What does this mean to you?

5:30-5:50pm:  Do you see your life as Literary?  Why or why not?

5:50-6:10pm:  Ever catch yourself overthinking?  What do you do to change, if anything?

6:10-6:30pm:  How can we use overthinking, rather than fight it?  This is entirely a writing issue…..  And it can go several ways, directions, climbs, and flights.

6:30-6:40pm:  Close…..  What’s on tonight’s page?

ASSIGNMENT:  Continue working on Sedaris essay.  Type a one-page story from your day, and email it to me.  Keep writing in your journal…. Record your observations and react to them!  Buy Samantha Irby’s book, ‘We Are Never Meeting In Real Life’.

Hello guys! Hope everyone is doing well! I basically have been writing about how I have been feeling lately. I was a little overwhelmed in the past few weeks so for now on (for the rest of the semester) I will give my best but at the same time I am not push me so hard, I will try to be more gentle with myself. I know that in the end, somehow, everything is gonna be alright 🙂

hello everybody, i’m a bit tired from work but excited to be here for today’s class.i’ve been writing a little less strict compared to have i normally would in previous english classes, and i feel like being more relaxed has had a better outcome on my writing style. i’m going approach the rest of this semester with a clear and focused mentality and just get it done!!

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Nice!!! Write along the way, as to teach the future YOU.

it is hard to see an obstacle as a gift, or otherwise something positive

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

That’s precisely what makes it a gift… the perspective. You gift yourself with strength and resolution…

  19. Dominic Costantino's avatar Dominic Costantino says:

Hope everyone is well. Today I woke up for my open at 3:20 am and saw the weirdest things on the road in the dead of night! Kind of a spooky way to start the morning off: weird intermittent fog, weird ruffling in the bushes, crackheads bothering us at 5 am. Always fun!

  20. jakesilva753's avatar jakesilva753 says:

Rest of semester huh? Crazy how fast things are happening

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Yep….. ten weeks left. That’s 20 meetings. Actually, less with holidays…

  22. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

In my “teaching” life I’ve heard so many students so quick to voice what ails them, what hurts, why they can’t get something done. While being empathetic to their reality, I always encourage them to use that momentum in a different way. Just a thought….

  23. Giovanni Vaca's avatar Giovanni Vaca says:

I think I’m going to approach the rest of the semester strong and just end 2020 on a good note.

  24. Shantel Shaw's avatar Shantel Shaw says:

    Good evening everyone!

I have been continuing to reflect on my day for my writing prompts unless I come up with something creative that day. I think I am going to be approaching the rest of the semester by staying positive and with an open mind!!

  25. finn ransome's avatar finn ransome says:

I could say my obstacle today was pretty straight forward. A history class this morning at 9:00 did honestly challenge me. I would say especially because I was tired. However I got through it and learned a lot about the makings of our constitution and the revolutionary War. So some could say my morning was productive, but i’m just going to say it was more surprising then educationally provoking. Anyways how was your morning?

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

      Busy. Empowering. Loving…

      1. finn ransome's avatar finn ransome says:

thank you, was yours busy or relaxing?

      2. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

        Both, and neither…

      3. finn ransome's avatar finn ransome says:

        very quantum of you

    2. Shantel Shaw's avatar Shantel Shaw says:

History class does that to me as well!

  26. Abie Prieto's avatar Abie Prieto says:

Well manuscript are text that the author doesn’t publish so for me this means thats my life is the main story while my manuscripts are the silence victory or those moment where you take a deep breath and enjoy what you accomplished

  27. Gianina Mencarini's avatar Gianina Mencarini says:

Im super excited for the rest of the semester and to read the other books you have planned!! Ive been writing here and there but I probably should to be writing more. I’ll be working on that extra hard in the next couple of weeks

  28. Daniel Bagley's avatar Daniel Bagley says:

Your life is a story and the memories that stay with you forever are the parts the reader reads to themselves. People dont care about the fact Harry Potter take ate eggs and toast for breakfast and the reader doesn’t care about if you didnt match your socks. They care about the big moments like your first kiss or your first house.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

      I agree..

  29. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

This moment is a story, its own manuscript. Want to be a “better” writer, start seeing your life as something more than just “worth” writing.

  30. jakesilva753's avatar jakesilva753 says:

Quick question … what exactly is a manuscript

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

A book, or story, something collected in pages….

  31. Dominic Costantino's avatar Dominic Costantino says:

I can’t wait to vote in this election, end the semester strong, and end 2020 on a good note

  32. niannavalle's avatar niannavalle says:

I have mostly been writing when something negative happens and I need an utlet. It’s been helping me to work through my thoughts. Im very curious for the rest of the semester and excited to get reading.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

      You’ll love Irby’s book!!

  33. I was working on longer essay for a week.I am unable to write in journal as I think my life is not exciting enough to write in journal.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Well, you need to shed that mentality. Write it down anyway. It’s the reader’s job to decide if it’s interesting, not yours.

  34. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Not a matter of pushing yourself to do something as much as knowing that it will get done and you will be the one doing.

  35. Débora Vitaliano's avatar Débora Vitaliano says:

It has been a tough time to everyone, for sure. I read a poem yesterday that literally clear my mind. It’s called ”you are not depressed, you are distracted – by Facundo Cabral.” I totally recommend for everyone when you are feeling a little down

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

      Thank you!!

  36. finn ransome's avatar finn ransome says:

I think I need to increase my consistency. In terms of education, I think the one way to really keep up on work and learning is to keep a consistent schedule and habit to do my work. If there is one thing Sedaris tried to highlight is the importance of a habit, and a habit for my college work I think will benefit me down the line. Even past this semester and through the rest of my educational journey. What are your long term goals to accomplish in College?

  37. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

    Stick with the times, everyone!!

  38. niannavalle's avatar niannavalle says:

Referring to my own life as literature feels odd for me because it makes it seem more important. I am just an average person who’s day to day life is no more interesting than the next persons. If my life was literature it may be more entertaining and rounded.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Not at all.. just means that it can be read by others and possibly help them.

  39. Gianina Mencarini's avatar Gianina Mencarini says:

You can write about anything in your life. Doesn’t have to be interesting, but it’s still literature. I also think that your life is written already out for you. You pretty much just follow a script or story and how your story ends is how its supposed to be

    1. Shantel Shaw's avatar Shantel Shaw says:

      Well said!

  40. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Life as literature to me means that everything can be written and should be written, and can be read.

  41. jakesilva753's avatar jakesilva753 says:

I think it’s important to see your own like as a manuscript because at the end of the day, you are the author to your own life. Though obstacles may occur, you have the power to make a difference and come up with an ending you’ll be satisfied with.

  42. I see my life as literary, definitely! I am always writing lists and jotting down my thoughts. I also love to journal, even before this class I would keep a personal journal. Sometimes, what I am writing isn’t a complete sentence – it may just be a word or phrase. Even if something fun doesn’t happen in my day or week I try to write.

  43. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

This is literary… can be written and read. Everything is a page, set of pages.

  44. Dominic Costantino's avatar Dominic Costantino says:

I have recently been trying to find stories in everyday life and it has been really fun! I will walk to a store, for example, have my earbuds in without playing anything, and observe the world around me and create stories in my head as I walk. I’ll make inferences and create characteristics of how I think they would act in their given situation.

    1. I really love this! I’ve always fell like this is how so many writers get character ideas for their books, etc!

      1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

        True!!

  45. Shantel Shaw's avatar Shantel Shaw says:

Thinking about my life as Literature, it makes my open my eyes and think of my life in ways I haven’t thought of before. For example, if I told had a story about my life it would be different than most because I am a very down to earth person who is very caring and fortunate about my life. I love my life and now love thinking about my life as literature. Going through high school I was always told that the reason I get along with so many people is because I am a leader and listen to others, this is something that would be in my book.

  46. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Manuscript… could be a short story, book, memoir, or several stories and books…

  47. I am very excited for the rest of this semester! My plan of approach is to do my absolute best, continue keeping the habit of writing and expressing what’s going on in my head and also….stay determined !!

  48. Dominic Costantino's avatar Dominic Costantino says:

Thinking of life as literature has also helped improve my memory a bit because I am being forced to pay attention to small details and make guesses on them.

  49. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Right now… I have a story around me, provoking and coaching me. The two bigger kids, the three week-old. Everything is instruction, everything is urging me one way or another. Same is true of your life. You don’t need much to write. There’s more than enough literature and prompts right around you, right now.

  50. Giovanni Vaca's avatar Giovanni Vaca says:

I truly feel like our lives are like literature and it’s up to us as the author to write a story. For example, Sedaris made his story a comedy where he always sees the funny side of things.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Yes! You can make it anything you want!
