English 5 – 1/25/21, Monday

5-5:10pm:  Introduction, settle in.  How’s the writing going?  Have you touched your journal?

5:10-5:30pm:  Questions about last class, the semester, the syllabus?

FOR TONIGHT’S PAGE:  This experience in English 5 will decline for you if you excessively deliberate, rather than ACTUATE.  Just move and create, contribute…

5:30-5:55pm:  What did you choose to write about, and why?  How did the writing start?  How long did it take you?  Did you learn anything about writing, your writing style and way?

5:55-6:20:  Jenny Lawson….  What did you find?  Have you started reading?  Do you have expectations?  Why, and what are they?  If if not, what can you tell about her from your research?

6:20-6:30pm:  Close….  What’s in your notes?

ASSIGNMENT:  Read the first three chapters in Lawson’s book.  Write and your journal and prepare to share ideas next class.  Suggested…. Focus on her writing style, her voice, tone, attitude, what you think she wants us to do or how you think she wants us to react.

Aw.. I wrote about how my sister and I needed to put our sick dog down over the weekend. I wrote in my journal because I was really sad and needed to pour my emotions & thoughts out on paper. I wrote about what happened but began to write about how good of a dog she has been over the past 12 years, wrote her best traits and wrote about some of the memories I will cherish.

  2. I wrote freely and whatever happened, HAPPENED
It started as just a description of the thoughts in my head and ended as a letter to Mikey about how I write. I didn’t edit or revise it but I did handwrite it first, which mad for a very interesting read when typing it up, lol

I chose to write about the band The Beatles and there lasting impact on the world with their message. I wrote about them because I throughly enjoy their music and the message that comes along with it. It started out fine and I got my message across. It took me about 2 and a half hours to write the full two pages and make sure it was coherent. I do not think I learned much about my writing from the assignment, but I did learn that when I can write about something I am more interested that I will put more effort into looking into facts to include.

For my 2-page essay I choose to wrote about three things I currently really enjoy. I chose to write about Star Wars, Video Games, and my best friends. I chose these, because I really do enjoy each one of them in their own unique way and I could talk about them for hours. I talked about how I am big nerd when it comes to Star Wars and video games, because I grew up on both of them ever since I was around eight years old. I also wrote about how my friend group has been together since middle school and we still continue to be very close with each other even with everything going on in the world right now.

I wrote about motivation, dedication, and allowing yourself enough breaks and I used how I handle school and my exercise routine as examples. I talked about how flexibility in your routine is really important too, because it allows you to enjoy life more when there is a chance instead of having anxiety about responsibilities you can do later. I brainstormed for about 15 minutes to come up with the general topic but I had been bouncing ideas back and forth in the day prior. The process probably took me about 2-3 hours. I felt a little lost without a prompt or a specific type of writing I was expected to give. I think the assignment was a bit out of my comfort zone, and I think I struggled to pinpoint what a good topic would be.

  9. I chose to write about how I was currently feeling in that moment, which started from song melody and intuition. I began with a question which led me to various different ideas, thoughts, memories… It took me about an hour I would say with a few workspace interruptions. I learned that I need to keep momentum with my writing and not stop and overthink. Try and edit at the end, rather than try to fix phrases constantly as I go along because I find it somewhat time consuming.

One thing that I noticed about my writing style is I tend to write about anything that comes into mind, I don’t really stay with a topic but in the same time I tend to somewhat connect each section of my writings. Once I started writing everything just came smoothly took less time then what I expected.

My 2-page writing was pretty random because I was indecisive on what I wanted to write. I began by explaining how my Saturday morning went because I had to go to work. Then I began writing about where I work and how Guy Fieri came to film an episode of one of his Dine-ins, as well as my experience working there and how stressful it can be. The paper took 1 or 2 hours and once my fingers began typing it was really easy to write about ” anything “. When Writing It was like if I heard myself conversating with someone and the flow felt natural and not forced upon me

I’m not a big reader in any way, but I when I read I usually put a little research on the author to try to understand what type of writer they are. This helps me get a better feel for the reading rather than just begin reading without knowing anything about the reading or author.

My expectations for the reading, based off of some of the comments already put out, is something potentially similar to how I wrote today. A bit of a more loosey-goosey style, something I also picked up on by the absurdly happy raccoon on the front. Are the chapters separated by the different titles? I had looked briefly into the book to get a better understanding of what I was heading into.

In fact, I’m excited about it. New perspectives are always fun. Also she has a great sense of humor, so hopefully I get to see that in the book.

I read reviews on a few of Jenny Lawson’s books. Everyone had great things to say about how freely she wrote and most comments had to do with how funny her writing is. I opened up to a random page the other day and remember being totally surprised by what I read. Not in a bad way, it was just very unexpected for something I’d be reading in school. But you warned us! Looking forward to getting started.

  42. I was a little terrified and amused with the raccoon book cover and title “Furiously Happy”. I felt an instant energy of mania and confusion. The word “furious” makes me think of unrestrained vibrations of anger and aggression but then the word happy comes write after? Whoa, unprecedented. It does something to my brain. Not sure why but I suddenly am thinking of a quote “pain is inevitable but suffering is optional.” Intuitive nudge…
