Writing is often taught from the riles of and calls for more structure, rather than expression. Even a critical essay, or “analytical” one, should be expressive. Expression should ALWAYS be free on the page. Thoughts? What has your experience been?

to me, an essay always was something that had a beginning, a journey, and an end, none worked without the other and all worked better when each section was organized and well thought out. An essay for me, is a little bit like a car or a machine. you keep it maintained and kept up well, the car will work great. If you don’t do those things to the car or essay, it won’t turn out well. Though if all steps are done correctly you produce a great piece of work and that’s what it is for me is really just the time you spend on it how how much of that time was quality time.
There are other ways..
Essays are meant to express the written word. They have a purpose, to convey thoughts, opinions, facts, stories, or emotions. Different styles of essays have different purposes and some are geared more towards entertainment,others towards an educational goal.
Can we talk about composition? The only thing that comes to mind is book lol

For me, Composition is Art.
I think essays are informative and persuasive. Primarily persuasive in my opinion. Honestly, every essay I’ve written has been to persuade somebody to do something for me. Whether it’s give me a good grade, grant me a scholarship, give me an award, or accept me into some institution. I don’t believe I’ve ever written a structured essay for the sake of it.. and I probably never will lol
First thing I think of when I hear the word composition is how something is structured.

when i hear or think of compisition i think of composure well and the notebooks. but I’ve only known the messier side of life the past several years so composure or composing something is what comes to mind. if that makes any sense.

I relate to this! Composition makes me think of composing oneself. Pulling it together and making things work. Life is really messy though and sometimes, for me, composing myself simply looks like keeping it together as best as possible lol. I’ve had to learn a lot forgiveness for myself as well

When I hear composition, I think of the term ‘composing oneself’. Pulling togethers bits and pieces in to one cohesive piece that flows well and communicates the point in the most effective way possible.

Out of all of the different essay styles, I’ve always liked argumentative essay’s because I get to say my opinions and prove MY point. Describe why something is that way and give examples I want to give
When I hear composition I think of those journals type notebooks.
When i hear composition it I think of the way something is built and what its made out of. For example the composition of water is H2o which is two Hydrogen atoms bonded to an oxygen atom. In writing composition is the way you build you writing or essay like including argument points or interviews. its the body of your work.
I hear a notebook when I hear composition. Probably sounds stupid but I was never really pushed on composition before in previous english classes.

When i hear composition i think structure and direction , what was used to make something what it is .
Composition makes me think of a well oiled machine where all the parts move together in unison to complete a goal or task, like supporting sentences that tie back into your thesis.

Essay is a way to express your point of view and prove it. Just a way to explain why you think that way and what made you think that way
when i hear composition I think of music for some reason. I don’t play any instruments or anything but thats just what comes to mind.

When I hear composition the immediate next word I think of is notebook. When I think of composition as a whole I think of creating new concepts and new ideas really going back to the base of the word.

To me a composition is something that was put together, but also put together for someone else to enjoy. Like art, writing, and music, are all things people compose.
Composition-Compose. To me compose means to create to start from scratch and make something out of nothing. That is the wonderful thing about writing and composition is how every new page is a new beginning and a new world into your journey through bettering your writing.

It seems like composition really describes life itself. From how we’re made up to the things we enjoy doing, and the way the world around us functions. Seeing everybody’s comments made me realize there is much more depth to this conversation than I would have expected

Composition to me is just all form of literature, art , and even music. But the first thing that come to mind is a composition notebook and all the writing I have done in some of those notebook

My personal definition of composition is the structure and building block of the given topic and or item

my definition of composition is art. An art form that comes from writing like poem and songs. So much can come from writing and I feel like we haven’t even scratched the surface.
humor is definitely a Tool. I think it is one of the most valuable and important tools for humans, especially us being social creatures, humor can completely change the narrative of the story or setting however, so you do have to be careful because too much is overwhelming and too little is boring.
To me, I feel like composition and humor don’t go hand in hand.

Composition to me is the process of creating anything. It can range from any artpiece to assembling a piece of ikea furniture.
First thing I thought of for the word composition was keeping your composure during big moments and my second thought was music and how when you make a song the structure of it and how it flows is super important to it being an enjoyable song.

My own definition for “Composition” is something that is made up of a collective group of things into one. Like a song can have different instruments and lyrics. You put them together structurally and you have a song. A house is another example ( at least this works in my brain) that is made up different things constructed together to create something else. You have a foundation, walls and a roof. Went those are put together you get house.

When I think about anything in relation to composition. I think of ideas that have been merged into an expression. Whether that expression be material or not. Although my mind drifts into these ideas being personal. I’ve come to learn later in life that composition can come from a deep layered mutual level.

This is very well put. Composition can be related to so many things on so many different levels. How we compose things is how we communicate. There are so many different styles!
Composition to me is anything that conveys a message a clear point. It can be art it can be an instructional pamphlet on how to construct a premade desk, it doesn’t matter as long as it has a clear point.
Favorite style of Composition can be anything…. Music, comedy, movies, literature, journalism.. anything!!!

movie composition is one of my favorites just because there are so many different ways to compose a movie and different directors have different filming styles.
Books that turn into movies just because I like comparing the two and seeing how much the directors change the original storyline (the books are usually always better)

Compositions that can be humorous and haunting can be interesting too. It can have a comedic tone but still be teaching you new memorable things which might help you remember it even better.

A videogame is a composition and sometimes if I’ve gamed for a long period of time then go to bed I see the game playing when I close my eyes.Only on occasion when I’m really beat
