ENGLISH 1A – 7PM

7-7:10PM:  Instead of the usual intro….  Let’s talk about next year.  What do you want?

For tonight’s page…  Think about systems and practices you have in place to get you to what you want.

7:10-7:30PM:  Goals and how we get ourselves to satisfying them….  HOW?

FTP:  More than a how…. Understanding of self and seeing what you envision as truth before even the first step toward it, that’s what should be thought.

7:30-7:50PM:  Tom Foreman…..  What is he communicating in his book so far?

-For me… it’s Newness.  Something developing from what’s around you, and surprising yourself with new steps and new music about your day.

7:50-8:10PM:  What does it take to be a runner, to push yourself to do something  (Doesn’t have to be running…)?

-It doesn’t “take” anything, in my opinion.  You do it, or you don’t.

8:10-8:20PM:  What ONE idea connects all three of these books?  Sedaris, Irby, Foreman…..

Ideas:

-Relatability

-Observation

-Where you are, what you’re doing

-Heroism

-Kindness

-Truth

-Family

-Love of one’s own story

-Love

-Fear

-Strength

-(YOUR IDEA HERE…)

8:20-8:30PM:  CLOSE….  What’s on tonight’s page?

ASSIGNMENT:  Keep reading Mr. Foreman’s book.  I recommend having it done by the end of next week.  Start working on the prompt above, the ‘one connecting idea’….  Your final paper of the semester will be a position on this one idea.  Start brainstorming, playing with ideas.

ASSIGNMENT:  Look at all the research you’ve done on the three authors.  Your final paper will require THREE outside sources to support your position.  And, a works cited page.  For now though, just gather all your research.

I have started listening to motivational speakers and one in particular named Andy Frisella. he talks about finding what you are passionate about and using that to bring value to yourself and to the world. And i’ve really been thinking about hat it is that I want to bring to the world and once i create that list i am going to start putting the wheels in motion. my first step is doing this program that was created by Andy called 75 hard and once i complete the program i hope it will give me the mental strength that im looking for

For next year, first off, I want life to be normal again. I know I have to be patient which I have been but it’s limiting me on a lot of the stuff I want to do. One of the things I want to do most is travel. I had plans of going to Japan which had to get cancelled because of Covid. I was also getting ready to think about where I want to attend college and move to, but that has to be on pause for the same reason. This year helped me reflect more on myself, and next year I’m hoping to learn even more.

To satisfy a goal, I think our mind should be set on achieving it. It’s important to be in the right mindset and the goal should be realistic in order to achieve it. Then, probably break it down into micro goals, go about it step by step.

I taught myself to be my own cheerleader. I know I have many friends and family who support me, but in reality, the only person who can get you to succeed and try your absolute best, is yourself, and I’m learning to listen to the “you got this voice” rather than the “you cant do it, its too hard” voice. Kinda like that devil and angel on your shoulder thing lol But yeah, definitely learning to pay attention to how mentally strong I can be and Cheer myself up through all the hardships

Shared this with the last class.. but I honestly dislike the word “goals”… I prefer MOVEMENT, and making something a realty. Not saying goals are bad, just sometimes we too quickly accept them as goals and that they are just “goals”.

    1. kaylinromo's avatar kaylinromo says:

I like that a lot more. I feel very desensitized to “goal” that when I hear it, I think of it more in the terms of “the best outcome” rather than the absolute desired end point. Movement sounds doable, progressive, and even more positive. Idk, just me. Think I’ll adopt that new term for goal

That all leads me to Tom Foreman. His book reminds me of the first time I picked up marathon running, as I read his trails and tribulations it very much reminds me of the very ones I suffered through the first time I trained for it. This time I will do it more right, of course I will screw up but that is part of the fun. I also don’t have my Kids running with me like he does but they have been riding their bikes while I run which is making it really special.

So far i think what Tom foreman is teaching is to not give up on yourself. and no matter what the conditions are “literally” keep striving for your goals. even if it was below freezing outside he still went out and did what he had to do. he also shows us that its important to have a good support system. his wife could have easily gotten upset about him wanting to train while her brother was in town but instead she told he brother and sister in law the situation and supported him with his training. one thing im learning from the motivational podcast im listening to and what ill learn from 75 hard is that if the people you surround yourself with constantly dont support you, then you will never make it and if you give yourself cheat days, then your always going to find ways to cheat yourself

I think reaching a goal is satisfying itself. The only thing stopping you from your goals is you. That’s not always the case though because there could be things actually blocking you that are out of your control, that’s when you start to think about workarounds.

  43. What really stuck out to me in Tom Foreman’s book thus far is he doesnt use the weather or anything as an excuse to not run, to be honest when ever it was too hot or too cold I always used that as an excuse, and I can appreciate his strength for that. No more excuses they dont help!

I think Tom Foreman is talking a lot of the time about what motivates people, especially himself, and about priorities. I think he shows us the importance of family as a motivator. He never cared about practicing for his races until he was going to run the marathon with his brother. He clearly states his priorities and says why he stopped running originally as well. He always had his family and work as the main priority. It doesn’t mean he does not like to run or is no good at it it just shows what he cares about more. Family. For him it is running but for other people it could just be their hobby on the side that comes after family and work.

For what Foreman is communicating, I was going to say something along the lines of finding motivation and trying new things not just from your own thought but others around you. Surrounding yourself with something you love, and that being your source of motivation. In this case, he’s getting back up because of his daughter. So self love and motivation.
