I get to name them and there are going to be like 30 babies! I have also been doing a lot of homework since my last week of school is next week! Time has been going so fast during this shelter in place. I hope everyone is staying healthy!

Hey everyone, I am doing good, I am so very sad that this is our last class. 😦 Today I went shopping at Costco and that is pretty much it. Pretty uneventful these past few days…. I am excited for summer and for online school to be over, but I am sad that the possibility of my senior year getting canceled. On a happier note, I am also excited because tonight my family is making pizza, and pizza is what I need right now.

  6. Hi Class!
Today was a really nice day. I spent the morning on a walk with my kids. I am trying to get them to notice the little things around them instead of always being in such a hurry like the rest of our world. We noticed peoples gardens, some fairy doors, played make believe hop scotch and collected rocks. It was fun to see the world through their eyes. After our walk we ate lunch on the porch and watched some butterflies. It’s amazing how some of the most simple things in life can make you feel so content with life. I spent the remainder of the day reading my book, playing barbies with my daughter and cars with my son. Feeling good about life currently.

It hasn’t really hit me that it’s the end of the semester yet and it definitely hasn’t sunk in that next week is the last week of high school. 17. This semester has been incredibly chaotic, but I found creativity within that chaos. I noticed that no matter how many times I slip I need to pick myself back up. Life is tough, that is a fact, but what’s even tougher is finding the vigor to get back up. You cannot pick up the pieces if you don’t let yourself make mistakes and learn from them. We all fail, it’s human. However, letting yourself fail without learning about the why or what is unacceptable. This has been perhaps one of the worst semesters for me, I acknowledge that. It taught me to just keep on persevering. I control my destiny, only I have what it takes to push myself towards prosperity. I need to hold on tight and stay on top of what’s important. Even if I wasn’t at my best, I am thankful for having you Mike, as a mentor and colleague, once more. The invigorating energy that surrounds you has always left me feeling inspired and on top of the world.

Reflecting has become a great part of my life. I keep tabs on every emotion, action, and thought in a journal because of this course and I will continue to do so UNTIL I DIE!!!!!!!

    Hi everyone,
I’m doing so much better today. My son and I have completed our isolation as of Monday and got the chance to come home this morning! It was hectic as we needed to wait for the Health Department to send us our letters of clearance and then needs to get my truck sanitized before driving my son and myself home. But I’m oh so happy to be home. Writing in my journal has eased my situation when I felt frustrated I would write. When I felt lonely and cried my eye out, I would write. Writing this final has been so peaceful to have my brain focus on something other than just the isolation.

    Hi everyone,
My day has been interesting, I had minor surgery today, I got my keloid removed. The doctor just numbed my ear and then started to cut into it. Weird things don’t freak me out, they actually fascinated me. So when the doctor told me I wasn’t going under for the surgery I got excited. When he was cutting part of my cartilage got to hear it tear and crunch as they cut into it. Now I’m wearing a bandage all around my head and have to keep it on for 24 hours. So people are staring at me and I’m just embracing it.

Here is some of my writing from my journal prompt!!:: Before this class, I hadn’t really written for myself at all. I was afraid to write because I thought writing about my days would be boring to the reader. I do have a lot of funny things that happen to me, and in the past I would always record myself saying them, but now I think I will write these experiences down. Keeping a journal was hard at first, especially because I thought I had nothing to say. After we did the exercise in class of just writing everything that you could about your day in 10 minutes without thinking, that’s when I realized what was stopping me. I overthink things too much. I used the method of just writing as much as you can, as fast as you can because then I wasn’t worried about the boring or the good parts, I was just writing. This has made a stronger writer, and it will help me in the future especially in classes when it is hard to write. Now I know I just have to start writing and not think too much. This has made me a better reader as well because I notice style and how the author is writing what they’re writing and why they’re writing what they’re writing, instead of just what they’re writing. I can also appreciate an author’s narrative more because I know how hard it can be to be truthful and funny at the same time. Or just truthful. Writing in a journal is helping me to develop the Fuck it attitude because now I write whatever I want.

I liked the first prompt. Narrative is more than just a story. Effective narrative communicates feelings, progression over time and it transports and inspires. It is a very connective medium.
The two female authors are especially fearless because they combat their troubles with humor instead of ignoring them. They are fearless in their defiance of convention of what a women should be, and voice their opinions and reflect on their memories with confidence, even if the memories were marked with embarassment or pain. Lawson especially, when she wrote about how her embarrasing school experiences ended up showing her it was okay to be who she was. They don’t need perfect, neat, normal experiences to determine who they are. They are comfortable with their flaws, comfortable enough to realize that thier percieved flaws are atrributed the the powerful and complex beings that they are.

I also addressed this similarity in my final paper, I completely agree! Lawson showed us how to embrace our past. How to cherish not only the good moments but also the bad… even the bad moments that we want to forget. And Irby showed us how you should never let anyone tear you down and most importantly that we are all beautiful in our own way, no matter what size you are or the color of your skin, you are beautiful.

This challenged me to go back to one of our first class discussions where you said “If you’re not relating to a book, find out what you have in common with the author.” I liked writing down how I related to each of them and how they’ll contribute to me becoming a better writer.

      2. Jenny Lawson really stuck with me most. She is on my summer reading list. The others I had to dig more to find reasons to relate, but it was a good kind of digging because I learned more about them and myself in the process.

The prompts I really enjoyed. I felt like I could get my ideas out easily and it was good to go back into the books and notes for a little bit. My favorite was probably the one about Lawson and Irby together and or picking an author and talking about their writing style. Since all of the books were enjoyable, my ideas for the prompts just flowed and they were fun to write about.

I loved the journal prompt and what were my strengths and experience i learned as a reader and writer but also didn’t touch it but in inherently also incorporated the extra credit one because I really did love using my journal this year and has helped more than most things I have ever done also it helped me become more confident in myself as a writer and help me find a deeper understanding in books I read I actually READ the books now not just see it from surface value and I really have enjoyed that.

1 – What is you understanding of narrative? Use two of the authors from the semester to support your argument.
2 – Which two authors from the semester are the most similar, and why?
3 – How has the journal contributed to your strengths and experience as a reader, writer?
4 – The two female authors are similar in one way, as I see it…. And that is fearlessness coupled with strength and insight. Agree or disagree? Why?
5 – Pick one of our authors, and describe their style. Be sure to incorporate examples into your position.
6 – WRITE A PROMPT, AND ANSWER IT. (NOTE: This is not guaranteed or easy credit. Truly, this is the most difficult prompt on this final. So, if I were a 1B student, I would take some notes in my journal before typing a single letter….).

      Extra Credit Prompt:
What have you taught yourself this semester, about yourself… your written and read ways? Please also tell how the journal helped you teach yourself, if at all (which I would imagine it only HAS TO…).

      These are the prompts

I decided to write about my journal.
I enjoyed writing in my journal this semester. It’s taught me a lot about myself which is something that I was not expecting. My journal was a friend when I was unable to be with any of my own friends. It has helped me overcome something that I’ve been pushing away which are feelings. It helped me build a connection with writers and gave me insight into their work. In retrospect, it gave me insight into their world and them. It opened me up to a world where anyone can go anywhere and be anything you want. I may not religiously write in my journal but I’m going to create a few notebooks where I can write or draw my emotions. I would like to incorporate new vocabulary words within my work so that will be something I am going to work on. I’m glad I had a journal to get me through this semester, not sure how I would have survived without it.

I argued that Sedaris is a compassionate humorist. He was quite easily my favorite author we read mostly because of his ability to be so naturally genuine. He built relationships with all the strangers he met, whether it be a taxidermist or phone businessmen. I honestly admired him. So, when I went to describe his style I chose those words. Sometimes I was unsure if he was compassionate or just curious, though in the end I felt his actions proved he was both. Anyways I enjoyed this question…

Before this class I don’t believe I’ve read any essay style writing like this, and I also had not read any authors writing about their lives. I was strictly a fiction girl. Also thank you mikey for being so inspirational. Your words for tonight’s page were always so motivational, I couldn’t procrastinate in this class because I was never bored. I did not realize how much I was holding back because I was trying to force myself to be academic in my own journal. I found myself just existing through my writing lately and I feel like this is thanks to you Mikey! Final thoughts for the semester…

Im going to miss reading all your comments. I looked forward to knowing how everyone is doing and reading all your stories. I truly enjoyed this class. This class is the first English class where I actually spoke up and shared with everyone my opinion. I know most of you wouldn’t believe it but I’m usually a very quiet person. I guess I found my voice in this class and I’m thankful. I learned many different things that I’m sure are going to get me through life. I quote this pretty often but I love the saying “never argue from emotion but from logic”. I tell that to my high school students all the time now. Im going to miss everyone….

I hope everyone is successful in whatever degree they are working towards.

Reading the books assigned this semester has made me discover a whole new way of writing that I had not known about. I look at books differently, and before this, I thought reading was boring. I now see reading can be entertaining and funny. As long as you are reading the right book there is never a dull moment. I enjoyed how dynamic this class was. The energy here was not like any other class I’ve and I’ve taken like 80+ units at the JC. This might be the last English class I take and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. I also appreciate all my classmates and Mikey for teaching me that an evening class doesn’t have to be boring.
