Irby shows us that happiness is not only found in humor and comedic writings, but supposed flaws… Whatever you don’t like about yourself, see it a different way.

  4. I started watching a video on youtube where she is reading out of her book ‘Meaty’ and she seems very open and straight forward. she is talking about how she dropped out of college after both of her parents passed away the previous year and she was living in a crack house because the was the best she could do in a jam. but the way she reads it even though its pretty serious stuff she tries to make it into comedy. so far from just the five minutes of the video i saw she didn’t seem to paint the picture as much as Sedaris did but who knows maybe i just haven’t gotten far enough yet. she seems very interesting though.

      1. yes, her life couldve turned out way differently, but she found the humor in her situation, she said it wasnt so much as a crack house, but rooming housing that a lot of people who enjoyed smoking crack lived in! HA!

I will be honest I had not Heard of her until this evening. I am reading about her while we are having this discussion and still don’t feel like I am learning much. We shall see how her essay’s are, I imagine they will be radically different since and this is just on the surface. Sedaris is a white gay man from privilege and it seems that we have a young black Women that does not come from privilege.

I’ve been writing about identity crisis. I don’t know if it’s common to feel like you don’t know who you are at 22 years old, but lately I’ve been writing about everything that is new about me, what I no longer like, what do now like, and how I feel about the changes.

What I have been writing for myself is basically what I’ve been doing in my phone notes. I used to write songs (I never record, I just write for fun) about whatever is on my mind. Now I have just written it out to get more detail. Basically just goals and what not and what’s stopping me.

  11. I have been writing about how my school is because I have been stressed out and writing it about it has been relaxing. I haven’t been back to school since 5 years, I know is that much but trying to get into a routine and having my work schedule and school schedule worked out so I am not overwhelmed but eventually I still do thats why writing about that helps me work through it.

I wrote down that the kids in my apartment complex are probably scared of me. I say hello when I see them but they just stop whatever it is they are doing and stare at me. Makes me feel awkward. I am a big dude so I understand. People built like me were hard for me to appraoch when I was a kid. Makes me feel sad though.

  14. How did i ever think that juggling working full times as an essential worker, going to school, being a mom and wife was going to be easy? Man, this is some hard shit! LOL Not sleeping, going to work for 8 hours then doing mom duties?!? Deep breath, take it day by day, because when it’s all said and done, your littles will not be so little anymore and you will have all the time you ever wanted. Will I truly be happy when i finally get it though? Nope! I know I won’t. I will miss every moment of it. Wishing I could get it back even for just a moment. Actually, thinking about it now…makes me kinda sad.

I see this as an encouraging image. The building fell on her, but did she die? And if she did, it WAS just a dream. To me that means that the character having the dream is incredibly strong, and only dies in dream… Hard to kill in reality. Love that. RESPECT.

I also have a segment in my journal about Connect 4. I always thought it was childish but I played it with my girlfriend and learned some cool strategies to get “checkmates” while playing. Definitely changed my mind about the game. I lost 19 wins to 20 in the end but it was fun. Played against my dad the next day and crushed him due to his lack of experience. It was pretty funny because I think he thought the same of Connect 4 that I used to. Just a child’s game

Something that I wrote down is. I don’t know what depression feels like but I know that I am not right, right now. Are you suppose to have zero motivation, maybe it is the weather it is getting cold, maybe it is this covid since I am not getting outside as mush as I like, or maybe it is this election but I DO NOT WANT TO DO ANYTHING!!!

I’ve been writing about what i want to do in life. I know i’m young and i still have a lot of time but i’ve been feeling like i’ve been running out of time since i was 18 and now im 26 and it still hasn’t changed. im still far from where i want to be and my worry is that i won’t be there for a long time. but the big difference between now and when i was 18 is that my vision and plan to achieve my goals is much clearer. i have made short term goals to help me achieve the main goals.
