English 1A – 7pm section (3098)

7-7:10pm:  How are you?  Tell us about/narrate your day…

7:10-7:25pm:  Review of last class… What we’re doing this semester.

7:25-7:35pm:  Questions about the syllabus.

7:35-7:45pm:  Freewritng.  Not just how you begin an essay, or a reaction, or anything.  Yes, you should always edit and organize your composition later, but there should always be a sense of FREEDOM, and a freeing feel to your writing.  Writing is often taught from the riles of and calls for more structure, rather than expression.  Even a critical essay, or “analytical” one, should be expressive.  Expression should ALWAYS be free on the page.  Thoughts?  What has your experience been?

7:45-8pm:  What’s an essay supposed to do, anyway?

8-8:15pm:  When you hear “Composition”, what is the first thing you think?

8:15-8:35pm:  Composition is a piece of writing, a submission that is composed, together, self-supported.  A stand-alone piece, if you will.  It should also be noted, that composition entails several parts, and a consistency of Art, expression, uniqueness and music..

Post your own definition of “Composition”, below

8:35-8:40pm:  What is your style of Composition?  Does it involve any Humor?  Search for Happiness?  Or, a strengthening of existing Happiness?

8:40-9pm:  Close….  What’s on tonight’s page?  What are you going to write in your journal?

Assignment:  Write in your journal, OBSESSIVELY.  And, more importantly, FREELY.

And…..  please buy David Sedars’ book if you haven’t already.

It was a little stressful because of the situation happening and trying to be prepared for everything, but there was nice moments today as well. My cat recently learned to turn on the faucet in the bathroom sink and got soaking wet! It was really a silly situation. I’ve been feeling a little anxious as of late so i took an hour or so to play some games on my phone. The day went by with work today so there wasn’t much else to do. I hope everyone had a nice day today.

Hey KAYLINROMO! I share your concern, I’ll be praying for all the people affected. Stay safe! P.s.: my day also consisted of a couple of chores.

  18. Hi everyone!
My day has been okay. At work just did my usual feeding the patients and get them ready for their day. I had to get a room ready for a patient coming from the hospital. Then all my coworkers and I had to get tested for COVID-19 (which we have been the past few months). Once I got home I just was around my family and ate some Costco pizza.

    How was everyone else’s day?

    1. renvs's avatar renvs says:

I’ve been doing well save for the anxiousness of the situation happening! I hope everything is well for you! Pizza sounds great right about now!

    2. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

I went to work and made the best of it as i usually try to do, have to keep a positive attitude like we spoke about last meeting. I’ve b been looking forward to today’s class, Tuesday was very enjoyable and it was nice seeing everyone’s point of view with the topic.

Good evening! My day was like my usual everyday. I woke up got ready for work and than left to get my coffee from Marin coffee roasters. It is not a habit I am proud of, but I like routines and if I do not start my morning right it ruins my whole day. Work was really slow today so it felt like the longest shift ever. After work I grabbed food and cleaned up the backyard. Also played with my dogs a little bit. Now I am here to participate!

    1. renvs's avatar renvs says:

Routines are always great! It’s nice to have a tempo for the day! What kind of dogs do you have?

  23. Gabriel Serrano's avatar Gabriel Serrano says:

Good to hear everyone has a fun day, mine has been work all day, barely got home at six so I’m feeling very tired, but I’m fine:)

  24. Michael Pearson's avatar Michael Pearson says:

So narrate my day, I spent the entire day trying to get my kids on all their different zoom meeting and failing often. When not doing that I am trying to keep up with a baby all while making meals for the kids to eat. So for me this is my break time.

    1. ethonn's avatar ethonn says:

  27. claudia alvarez's avatar claudia alvarez says:

Glad to hear that everyone is doing good, my day has just been staying at home and finishing up some assignments. Since the air quality is not the best, I have not been able to go outside for a workout/run.

  28. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Thoughts on last class? Our discussion? They syllabus I emailed? What are getting into this semester??

    1. renvs's avatar renvs says:

The last class was a lot of fun! I learned a lot about the website and learned to try and keep things concise! I got my books for the semester earlier than I expected so I am excited to dive into them! I am eager into getting started on the journal!

      1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Yes!! Start writing in that journal.. fill those pages and fall in love with your thoughts!

  29. Michael Pearson's avatar Michael Pearson says:

I find the “text” based class to be interesting, especially for an English class. It does make us write a lot more.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

That’s the point, my man!! Enjoy!!

  30. LuisV123's avatar LuisV123 says:

Last class was different from what I am used to. The discussion we had was intriguing and fun.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Good!! And writing while you think and communicate empowers you as a writer and thinker!!

  31. Quince Wu's avatar Quince Wu says:

This is the first time I am in this type of class! It’s a very interesting experience!

    1. Gabriel Serrano's avatar Gabriel Serrano says:

same here, its quite strange but cool at the same time

      1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Strange? This is an English class. We’re writing while we thinking and communicating through words, in the moment. Rather than strange, I see it as strengthening.

      2. Gabriel Serrano's avatar Gabriel Serrano says:

I find it strange since I’m more used to a conventional type of class. So for me doing this is quite different but a very good Idea at the same time

      3. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

We’re all used to conventional class. I prefer that. But here we are, and I’m so excited to be working with you. Cheers.

      4. Gabriel Serrano's avatar Gabriel Serrano says:

        thank you so much

  32. Alondra Catalan's avatar Alondra Catalan says:

I had a question about the freewriting at 7:35. Is it like an assignment? And if it is do we post it like a comment or do we email it to you?

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Just here on the blog. As I said last class, assignments will be announced at the bottom, and submitted over email.

  33. ethonn's avatar ethonn says:

Hey everyone, kind of a short day didn’t do too much. I’ve been sick this past week with a bug (luckily it’s not corona) so that’s been real fun haha. Kind of been taking things slow, just relaxing and keeping up with the news and what not, watching a lot of youtube.

    1. haleywalsh24's avatar haleywalsh24 says:

      hope you get better soon!

      1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

        Me as well.

      2. Hope you feel better soon, I know it’s probably scary.

      3. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

        Very kind of you..

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Thanks you Claudia!! Share some ideas tonight.. make it your own.. and enjoy!!

      1. claudia alvarez's avatar claudia alvarez says:

        Will do!

  35. haleywalsh24's avatar haleywalsh24 says:

My thoughts on last class is that I now understand how this class works. I was little confused but I found clarity. I also feel like the assignments will help me figure who I am as a person and maybe even spark some growth.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

      Great!!

  36. I thought last class was awesome! love this site, love how we can interact with each other. Syllabus is pretty straight forward.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

      Great to hear!!

  37. jihmai's avatar jihmai says:

My day was good just the fact that I was board for most of the day but the bright side is that my family and I are safe.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

      Try writing through that boredom..

  38. LuisV123's avatar LuisV123 says:

Will we be able to see our grades from this class or have access on any site to see them?

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Communicate with me to know grades on anything.

  39. Quince Wu's avatar Quince Wu says:

This site was confusing in the last class, but I am getting better at using it. This site is super cool!

    1. Alondra Catalan's avatar Alondra Catalan says:

Yeah I think with more practice we’ll get the hang of it.

  40. kaylinromo's avatar kaylinromo says:

I agree with Michael! I definitely find this class to be very interesting and new due to everything being through “text”. I think learning and getting the hang of it as I go is actually pretty fun and I’m curious as to what direction the dynamic of the class will take as we get more into it through the semester. So far so good though!

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Put your self into your words, stay connected, and you will master and control your entire experience.

    2. Michael Pearson's avatar Michael Pearson says:

My Ego loves being agreed with so thank you LOL.

  41. I think this semester will bring a lot of clarity.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

      Clarity, Composition, and LIFE.

  42. ethonn's avatar ethonn says:

Also last class was pretty cool, everyone was really active and it really felt like a live chat in a sense when you refresh. I like that because everyone’s also being themselves and I like hearing what you all have to say.

    1. renvs's avatar renvs says:

Agreed! This sort of learning is fun, spontaneous and exciting!

      1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Glad you like it. That makes me smile. Cheers to you and your positive attitude.

  43. garinmccormick's avatar garinmccormick says:

This form of class definitely can keep you more engaged than a zoom call because it simulates the group discussions and interaction that a normal in-class feeling would have. A nice aspect.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

I agree. And, you learn more from your colleagues!! You can always come back and reference their thoughts.

    2. Very true, Im always too shy to speak up during a zoom class, this is more my style!

      1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Good to hear, Patricia. Happy to help in any way I can, and I’m always here. 🙂

  44. Michael Pearson's avatar Michael Pearson says:

Should we also use this site to collaborate with other classmates?

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Sure!!! Ask for emails… get phone numbers.. This is a COMMUNITY!!!

  45. Quince Wu's avatar Quince Wu says:

    we should!

    1. Definitely!

  46. aalexvillanueva94's avatar aalexvillanueva94 says:

My thoughts on the last class: I really enjoyed it. seeing everyone’s opinions on the subject of happiness was interesting. Happiness is something I often think of. So it was a great way to start the semester and I believe its going to be a great semester even though we aren’t actually in class. I also feel that this way gives people the opportunity to say what they feel, since sometimes in the class room some people may be shy.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Love how you orient us with your remarks. Good job!!!

  47. LuisV123's avatar LuisV123 says:

I don’t have a question towards the syllabus.

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Cool. Let me know if that changes. Happy to help.

  48. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

For tonight’s page… Experience is something to create. Grieving is a decision, and celebration is always invited. Why would rather grieve than celebrate? Just a thought, but even when there is hardship, there is instructional humor.

    1. garinmccormick's avatar garinmccormick says:

I feel as if to ignore grief, a healthy process of life, could bring apon more grief. Why not welcome both grief and celebration. Grief could even bring more appreciation and desire for celebration. Humor is always a must.

      1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

        Good thoughts here!

    2. LuisV123's avatar LuisV123 says:

Is this only for tonight or would you like us to say what we think now in class?

      1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

This is a thought I’m sharing with you all, for your notes.

    3. I think that when we grieve, it is in our head to automatically feel sad and its looked at in that manner, where as a celebration, we know in our minds that celebrating means happiness and success. I believe its all in the mind on how we see and deal with these emotions and how we should act on them because it’s what it’s always been.
When there is hardship we somehow find it easier to see humor in it because its not as hard as having to deal with Grief. If that makes any sense.

      1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

        Interesting…

  49. Quince Wu's avatar Quince Wu says:

Professor Mikey! I still don’t get what tonight’s page is?

    1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

Tonight’s page is if you are taking notes.. something from me to you. A thought.

    2. garinmccormick's avatar garinmccormick says:

      haha

      1. mikemadigan's avatar mikemadigan says:

What’s so funny? I think he was asking for some clarification, which I am happy to provide.
